These individuals have motivated Hannah to make the decision to take her own life without realizing it. Clay Jensen, an acquaintance of Hannah, is motivated to find out where he fits into the story after he had received these tapes. Clay listens to all of the tapes in order to find out where his name appears. He finds out that his name does not really belong on her list and the reason why he received the tapes was so that Hannah could apologize. Clay finally learns her story from her point of view and becomes regretful because he feels he could have saved her from making her decision.
Tony, Clays friend, is motivated by his concern for his friend. He follows Clay and talks to him about Hannah. Tony follows Clay in order to make sure that he is alright after hearing about his part in Henna’s story. Tony helps Clay to understand his role in the tapes. Clay becomes overwhelmed by what Hannah says on the tapes but Tony calms him down and offers him a ride home. Clay decides to walk home and think about what he has learned. Hannah Baker is motivated by the anger and stress that the actions of thirteen individuals have caused in her life.
Hannah believes that the small actions of these people affect every part of her life to the point that she could not control it. She says, Mimi don’t know what goes on in anyone’s life but your own. And when you mess with one part of a person’s life, you’re not messing with Just that part,” (page 202). She continues to say, “When you mess with one part of a person’s life, you’re messing with their entire life. Everything … Affects everything,” (pages 202-203). These thirteen people who are on her list have caused a ‘snowball’ of events to occur in her life, causing her stress and resentfulness towards them.
Hannah makes cassette tapes that explain to these people why they are play a role in the reason why she makes the ultimate decision to end her life. The actions of these thirteen individuals have resulted to Henna’s death. Clay Jensen, one of Henna’s friends at school, had received the cassette tapes that Hannah made and is motivated to find out why he has received the tapes and where he fits into her story. Clay is known to be an overall good person; he has a good reputation and is genuinely kind to everyone who he interacts with; he even ad a “crush” on Hannah.
This makes him extremely curious about why he is one of the thirteen reasons. In order to find out where he fits in he must listen to all of the tapes. Clay thinks to himself, “These tapes shouldn’t be here. Not with me. It has to be a mistake,” (page 10). Clay finds out that Hannah Just wanted to apologize to him for pushing him away when they were Just starting to get to know each other. This results in Clay to miss Hannah extremely and to become very emotional knowing that he may have been able to change her decision.
Tony, Clays friend, is motivated by his concern for his friend to follow Clay and to make sure that he is all right after he finds out why he is on Henna’s tapes. Tony ha a second set of tapes that Hannah asked him to old onto before she made her decision. Tony knows who is on Henna’s list and he also knows why they are on her list. Tony follows Clay to Moment’s restaurant where he assumes that Clay is listening to Henna’s tapes. Tony eats at the restaurant than waits outside in his car for Clay t leave the restaurant.
After Clay leaves, Tony offers him a ride home and he tells Clay hat he knows he is listening to Hannah Baker’s tapes. Tony tells Clay that his story is on the next tape and he persuades him to listen to it. Tony does this to make sure that Clay is in a safe environment when he hears Henna’s story about him and also to make sure that he is mentally all right. He asks Clay, “Are you going to be okay? ” After Clay hears the tapes he has very mixed emotions of confusion and depression. Tony makes sure that Clay is all right to be by himself, than leaves to go home after Clay lets him know that he wants to walk home.
The characters who are in Thirteen Reasons Why are motivated by different factors that significantly affect their lives. Hannah Baker is motivated by anger and revenge that the actions of people have caused in her life. This stresses out Hannah to the point where she decides to take her own life. Clay is motivated by curiosity to find out where he fits into Henna’s story and also to find out why he had received the tapes. Clay finds out that Hannah Just wanted to apologize to him, which causes him to miss her extremely. Tony is motivated by his concern for his friend Clay, owing what Hannah said on her tapes.
